So I pulled the doghouse off the back of the motor to look things over, gittin ready to make a run down to Baja in about a month. Lokkiin back at me is soot all over the middle section of the Garrett turbo. Close exam reveals that two of the small bolts holding the hot section to the middle section are GONE! I found one of them setting on the pedistal. The lower small bolt is backed out, but held in place by pedistal bolt. Cant see the other lower bolt, but I assome the same. The1999 Van only has 40K miles on it!
Okay, so quetions are;
I can see two long bolts holding the Turbo to the pedistal, are these the only bolts holding the turbo to the motor?
What caused the bolts to back out?
How about some guidance?
Thanks, nick
Yes, just those two bolts. But you'll need to loosen the clamps off the down pipe and the up pipes before you can remove it. Make sure you get a new set of o-rings to go between the turbo and pedestal.
These bolts don't usually back out like that, especially with that low of mileage unless they were just loose from the factory.

When I first pulled my stock turbo I found 2 of the small bolts missing also. Later after cleaning in the valley I found them down there I dont know how long they where missing
This actually a known issue with the 7.3, Ford and International have an updated bolt kit with different threads that are not supposed to back out.

There are coarse and fine thread bolts available. You will have to determine which you have to get the replacements. The coarse thread ones are kind of a pain to find. I ordered a bolt kit for an early '99 and it came with the fine threads and we needed the coarse ones. The order info doesn't tell which are in the kit. Finally scrounged them from a mechanic with spares in his tool box.
Update;
Thanks to amthatiam I was able to get the upgraded turbo bolt kit from my local Ford dealer. The Ford parts guy, did not know about the turbo issue or the upgraded bolt kit. The bolts have been installed. I ordered the rest of the parts from Clay, so once they come in I can put my Van back together.

I finally installed the gauges, except for the power connections. Has anyone added gauges on a E350 van and know the best place to connect the power leads for the pyro and trans temp gauges? I also need to connect up the instrument lights also.
Thanks, Nick
I finished the gauge install one day before my trip to Loreto in Baja towing a 5000 pound Sea Ray boat and loaded up with fishing gear for all three of us, including a small chest freezer. I re-flashed my chip to the performance tune with my Superchip 1705 tuner. I averaged about 10MPG for the 1600 mile trip using Mexico diesel. The Pyro came in very handy on the long steep grades and through the dessert. The engine temp never got above normal, the tranny temp got as high as 190 but no more. Overall the trip was uneventful, and safe! Did manage to get my all time record on sailfish of 100 plus using 30 pound line!
