Hey guys. I was referred from the 73-79 forum for this issue.
I'm about to change the fluid, filter and pan gasket on my '73 C6, and I want to make sure that I put the correct fluid in.
This is what I know:
-The dipstick says Type F is the correct type to use, but it may or may not be the original dipstick.
-I've also heard that Dexron III may be used in rebuilt units. I think the transmission was rebuilt in '89, and the fluid that is in it now is orange/red-ish.
-It may not be the original '73 trans, and I know that later '70s C6 models are supposed to use Dexron II.
I don't want to burn it up, but how do I know what to use?
A good question. If I was confident it had been rebuilt in `89 I would use Dexron. However whatever you decide to use make sure you drain the torque converter as well as the trans.
