1963 Rear Diff.

My diff has crapped out and is making a lound clunk while driving. Checked the shaft no problem there but have a slight wabble in the yoke on the diff. How do I identify which diff it is? I have a '63 F-100 2wd.

Jay, You very likely have the Ford 9" rear. Look around the bolts to see if there is a ID tag. That can give you more info. I like this site for helping ID the rears.

If there is no inspection cover on the rear of the axle housing, it's a 9 inch.

The 9" rear axle ID tag is under one of the bolts that attaches the carrier to the housing, usually at 5 o'clock. Do not be surprised if it's missing.

However, if Limited Slip was ordered, the rear axle is a Spicer-Dana 44 which has an inspection cover.

And...Ford also offered a Spicer-Dana 60 on these trucks, which was available with or without Limited Slip, and also has an inspection cover.
