boat rack

Has anyone ever built or had someone build a boat rack for the mighty X? Some thing that could carry a 14-16 ft car-topper. Not much fun if you go camping and not able to take a boat out, so I just got thinking if anyone has done this yet, or will I have to be first. Looking for some ideas to go on top of what I am already thinking.

Have you looked at yakima? Yakima Racks, Bike Racks, Roof Racks for Skis, Cargo & Kayaks - Yakima

They have a lot of sporting type carriers and such. I'm not sure I understand what you want though, are you looking for a way to carry a smallish john boat on top of your X or are you looking for an option to put luggage racks/box on top of your boat/trailer?

I want to carry a 14-16 ft alum boat on the top of the X. I don't think the yakima would be up to the task.

Kind of a self loading boat rack that you sometimes see on the pickups. Just has to be removable fairly easily. I know I'm not asking for much am I.

Trac Rack used to make a nice system that had short rail (just long enough to mount the short verticals) and short verticals for the rack. You could slide the verticals off just like the regular version making them quick and easy. Then there was a company making a roller that attached to the cross rail.

I've only seen some ladder racks that lower the ladders, nothing that can lower/lift a boat. You might try contacting the contractor van fitters, such as adrian steel Commercial Van and Pickup Equipment | Adrian Steel | Commercial Van and Truck Equipment, Cargo Trailers, Accessories they might have more info.

I have carried and am just about to start again, carrying a 14' jon boat on top of my excursion. I use Thule racks with 4 stops (two on each bar). They fit in the factory rails and work just great. I tie the front onto my push bar in front and two ropes in the back to the trailer hitch. The stops on each bar keep it from sliding side to side. I have even made a "football T" out of 2" square pipe that I fit into the trailer hitch for loading purposes. I usually do this by myself and don't want the boat to touch the truck. I placed PVC on the "T" so it would slide easily. After putting up the boat, we hook up to a 31', pull-behind Jayco and off we go! Good luck.
