Mechanical (just where I would start looking)

1) It sounds like the starter may have a missing/damaged tooth. Has it ever been replaced?

2) When was the last time you changed/flushed the transmission fluid? In my own experience, in a Ford if you don't flush the transmission fluid and put in a new filter after about 70K it will act like that. I would start there before I tore anything down.

Of course, you may have already thought about that.

Electrical

I'm having a few gremlins myself on my '01 Expedition and it only has 60K on it, but it is a rebuilder I just bought. Just out of curiosity, do you drive on rough/dirt/gravel roads a lot? Having grown up in rural OK it has been my very personal experience that when vehicle is subjected to that kind of use things have a tendency to vibrate loose. I was always tightening screws and putting trim back into place.

Just wondering, and I hope this helps at least a little bit.

On your electronic issues, I would suspect a windshield leak. This is a common problem that exhibits some of the side effects you're seeing. The GEMS module gets wet due to the leak and creates havoc. Find your GEMS and check for moisture. Did your problems start after a rain?

KeystoneHomeOK -

1) The Starter has never been replaced. Will the starter get progressively worse?
2) I had the transmission flushed with a new filter today at P.B 139.00. The transmission is shifting much smoother.

Electrical- I wish i drove on Rough roads only paved ones where i live.

Bumparker / Alloro -

I've never connected rain or car wash with the problems but i pay close attention. If there is moister in the GEMS, will replacing it get my electrical back in order (compass/Temp/Odometer/) working again?

KeystoneHomeOK - Bumparker / Alloro - Thank you for you input

IF it is the starter, then yes, it will continue to get worse. Once it goes from worse to gone, you'll be stranded. It used to be an easy fix, I've replaced a lot of them, but never on a vehicle made after 1990!

Good luck!

I have not had the moisture problem, but from what I've read you need to dry out the connections to the GEM and maybe use a electrical connection cleaner if any corrosion has begun. That usually seems to fix the electrical issues as long as the leak has also been fixed. The leak is the problem and the electrical gremlins are the symptom.

The guy at pb tells me its the starter. He wants $150.00 for a remanufactured and $65.00 for labor.

How difficult would it be to change it out myself? I didn't find any posts on how to change it out.

Thanks KeysoneHOmeOK and BumParker!!

I'd have to get up under mine and look at it. There is so much crap on 'em anymore it may worth the labor just to avoid wading through the wire spaghetti!

Actually, it may just be an issue of getting to it. It's not hard to replace, just to get to it. You might try searching YouTube. When I owned my scooter I could find find anything I needed about maintenance. Hang on, let me check...nope. You can always try Chilton's.

On the starter, I would say it depends on many variables:
1. How mechanically inclined are you, and do you have the right tools?
2. What is the cost of a reman starter if you buy it yourself?
3. What is your financial situation?

$65 for labor suggests the job is pretty quick. $150 for parts suggests you can buy a reman starter for $75. Do it yourself and save $140. For that kind of money and the convenience, I'd just let PB do it. Heck, the Ford dealer charges $100 just for the diagnostics, this would be a $700 job or more at the dealer.
