Intercooler...

so im jus wondering for those of us that have our turbos , who has thought about adding a(n) intercooler like one of those that they sell on ebay? im not sure if it would make that huge of a differecne in performance but as for egt's id think it would help keeping up lower for better towing? whats yalls thoughts and opinions

-ooh and as for shorting the rod on the waste gate is this recomended or is it easy to do ?

You will be surprised what an intercooler will do!

Colder air = Higher air density.
Higher air density = More fuel.
More fuel = More power.

Yes, You can shorten the rod, it is imperative that you do not let the rod spin in the diaphram, hold the rod with vise grips and don't let it turn, turn the clevis, you may have to remove it and tap it out further.

I have never done it, I'm sure someone will clear up the adjustment procedure for you.

Many of the turbo wastegate rods were staked.

So if you try to shorten them, they reward you by breaking off.

Then you are off to the parts store for a new one at about 50 dollars.

So if it don't turn easily, you should measure how much thread you have on the rod, then turn the clevis off the rod.
A tap and die run down both pieces to clean up the threads and remove the stakes will have you ready to go.

Also soaking the rod and clevis threads with penetrating oil never hurts, I have heard of several rods twisting off while trying to thread the clevis off.

At stock boost levels, an intercooler will help some with EGT and a bit more power.
But given the low levels of boost an IDI sees, it is probably not worth the expense power wise.

If you can find a used intercooler and can fab up the plumbing, lower intake air temp is never a bad idea.

Dave, Have you ever checked your charged air temp?

I would be interested in the charged air temps on turbo'ed IDI's, no intercooler.

Thanks

I have not.

Mine would not be a very good indication of what it normal.

Between the ram air and running almost three times stock boost levels for a 6.9 mine would be way high.

For this to have much meaning, you would need ambient air temp, boost level and elevation befroe you could draw any conclusions.

From the way mine runs at sub zero temps, I know I could use an intercooler.
The colder the outside air is, the better it runs.

Wonder if they could use any hot shot drivers on the ice road?
My truck would really like those temps.

No hotshots but a lot of pilot pickups.

is there a posibility to buy a wastegate that can be easily adjusted because if that is a posibility and it isnt hundreds of dollars i would rather go that route that way i would have my stock one just incase ...

I have an intercooler on my set up, I know it works because the pipe leaving the turbo is hot, and the one coming back to the intake is cool (can hand touch it).
That's about as scientific and precise as my numbers are. According to my boost gauge I am only pulling 5-8 lbs of boost though,

I asked you for that exact reason!

Well, I know about where you live, I know how to look up the weather, so that leaves boost!

I have a pretty good idea of your boosts from your many posts on the subject!

So IMO this leaves me in a pretty good position to make and educated guess!

Not that it matters, I was just curious!

That would be a blast, Unfortunately I could never handle the cold, my hands are to busted up.

Did you see them roller coasters in the last episode... YeeHaa! Better float her just right or hang the freak on!

Now I'm curious I don't watch much tv, but the film crew was on the haul road this winter, and we have a hill called the roller coaster. Was the show you were watching on the haul road (dalton highway) or the ice roads in canada.

I will say I have wondered how hot my charge air was on many occasions.

Just another one of those many things on my to do list I wonder about that I have not taken the time to rigged anything up to check.

Also be interesting to see the difference between under hood and ram air from in front of the radiator make in charge air temps.
Given the drop in EGT's with ram air, I would guess a couple hundred degrees difference.

As far as finding a waste gate, not sure if Ford has obsoleted them or not.
ATS would probably be your best bet though.

The History Channel's "Ice Road Truckers" season 3 (current season) is on the Dalton.

I believe Dalton ... But I just asked my ol'lady and she says that doesn't sound right!

It is a different road from previous seasons.

I know they are calling a section of it "the roller coaster".

Soooo... I am unsure.

It looks thrilling, thats for sure!

Its the Dalton highway, and Dave it would be the most amazing thing ever if you could run a hot shot route up the ice roads.
