Horsepower/Torque Gains

I just bought an 06 XLT 4x4 with the 5.4. I was wondering what peoples set ups are that get the most torque and horsepower.

Exhaust
Intake
Tuner

Thats all i plan on getting for now will prob get the roush charger later but want a little more pep before then.

Thanks

Start with the tuner and work from there. SCT with custom tunes or Gryphon with custom tunes are your best bets. Then as you do more to your truck, whoever supplied your custom tunes can upgrade or tweak to match your mods.

wait on the intake

the exhaust is always usefull...but to be honest, it won't make a difference with the tuning unless you run longtubes & a offroad exhaust

the intake isn't going to really do anything but noise until you get some serious tunes...on stock programming, a CAI does nothing

to be honest, if you have about $2,400...get the Roushcharger Non-Intercooled. I know it is slightly more expensive...at first glance.
$500 - Programmer + Custom Tunes
$300 - CAI
$500 - Exhaust Kit

= $1,300

custom tunes will get you roughly 250-260 RWHP
or you could skip the CAI completely and go straight to F/I. That will put you at 300-310 RWHP...and boy is it fun...wicked fun

I did almost the same path you are describing. I started out with a Volant CAI and Magnaflow Duals...then installed the RoushCharger. I loved my Volant, but it was $300 down the drain since the RoushCharger can't utilize it.

Understandable but how well does the supercharger work without the intercooler it must have massive heat soak and lose a good bit of boost and performnace on a long trip.

don't know honestly

I drove mine 7 days a week in the city 100%..maybe 1-2 times a month I got onto the "Highway" out here and drove maybe 10 miles

Honestly, I wouldn't be worried about heat soak. The blower for the Non-Intercooled and the Intercooled sits above the Intercooler. The only part getting cooled is the actual air charge entering the motor. The Roush Intercooler is actually integrated into the lower intake.

So either way, if the blower itself gets heat soaked, it will affect either version equally
so yeah, you loose a little performance...but you should feel what these trucks feel like on boost. It puts you back into your seat

the price difference is $2,400 vs. $4,300...you only gain 30 ponies for that extra $1,900

heat soak occurs when the hot air that the spinning supercharger produces ends up in the intake. You always want cooler intake temps hence the reason for a CAI. Intercoolers help cool down the air that the spinning supercharger produces by passing it through like a radiator. The benefit of both is you get more CFM with cooler denser air to produce more horsepower. Without the intercooler you get the hot air form the supercharger which only benefits from one side, the higher CFM. After a long time of running the heat increases and becomes less efficient, like ur tranny temps, the longer you run and the harder it works the hotter it gets.

Tylus, do you think a CAI is really much more efficient than the stock intake with the Gotts mod? I've did the Gotts on my 5.4 and noticed a seat of the pants difference in performance. Just wondering if CAIs gained much HP>

CAI and the Gotts mod do the same thing...but to differing degrees

neither will give you any more HP with the stock PCM tune. You will need a custom tune specific to your setup to see real world results.

The CAI on my Mustang + Ford Racing Tune = +15 HP on a dyno. Not alot, but noticeable. Custom tuning will net me between +20-25 HP.

Honestly I recommend you keep you Gotts mod....unless you want more noise under the hood. The 3 CAI's I've had so far have been wicked for making the 5.4 and 4.6 sound like a big mean big-block.

How much do y'all know about the whole dohc swap in?
I have a police interceptor crown vic and want to put a super charger on it.
how much more gain is there with 4V heads from a lighting, marauder or cobra than with 2V or 3V?

look at a 2000-2001 Cobra or Mach-1

they both have a 300 HP 4v 4.6

vs a 2005+ 4.6 3v which has 300 HP

the Cobra makes such wicked power only in part due to it's 4v heads. It also has a forged bottom end and can take alot more boost. In stock form she is a beast. Add a few simple mods and the car is a fire breather...again, the forged internals

So a whole motor swap is the way to go for max power.
how much boost can the 2v, forged rod police 4.6 take and how much more can the all forged cobra motor take?
The marauder and cobra use the same 4.6, right?
