Hopefully somebody can help me here. I just bought a 2000# winch for my quad and the remote control for it is HUGE. I would like to put something a little smaller on the handle bar like a toggle switch. I have a three way switch that will work perfect for it. I returns to off after you let go of the toggle. I was wondering what else I would need to set this up. The switch is a 50a and the maximum current draw from the winch is rated at 120a when it is pulling 2000#. Will I have to put some relays in somewhere to make this work? I have no idea how to do it so anything can help.
I almost forgot, it only has two wires coming from the motor. A positive and negative from the battery to the switch and a positive and negative from the switch to the winch motor.
for $55, I can buy a rocker switch from Champion that will hook right up. I paid $80 for the winch so I guess it just seems high compared to that. I was just looking for an easy way to make something myself that would work.
Relays usually only handle 20-30A, for the hundreds you need solenoids. The control boxes I've seen use two pairs of solenoids to invert the polarity to the motor. Starter solenoids will probably work, you'll need four of them. Then I suspect you have 4-6ga wire, you will need a little more of it and connectors unless you can scavenge them off the old controller. Then some small gauge wire to trip the solenoids. It will not be very water resistant though.

I would be curious to see what this switch looks like. I assumed you wanted something very small that would mount on the handle bars and be out of the way. I switch that can handle the current of the winch is going to be large, with very large wires going to it, sort of the problem you have right now.
