Today I decided to go out and pull the wheels off my truck and inspect the brakes to see what I have to work with when I go to replace them. The rear shoes and drums look pretty good in my opinion.I'm still gonna replace them just to be safe. Now the front is where I had the most fun.If ya'll look at the pads and rotor on the driver's side, you'll see some nice deep ridges.I'm really surprised this truck stops at all. What in the world would cause the brakes to do that?I'm guessing that when the truck sat for 3 years before I got it,the pads froze to the rotor, and when we winched the truck up onto the trailer, they broke loose, but grinded into each other. And moving the truck around the yard probably didn't help either. Can anybody tell for sure what caused this,or at least give me some ideas?I'm currently slowly restoring the truck,so I don't drive it on the streets(who would with those brakes).I'm just curious as to how that would happen. In all my years of watching my dad replace brakes,i've never seen a set as bad as those. Thanks for all the help.
Here's the driver's side rear.
Passenger side rear
Here's the worst side in the front.I'm not too sure, but you might be able to see the ridges in the rotor.
Here's one of the pads. This one isn't as bad as the other.
Here's the inner pad. It's the worst.
And just for fun, here's one of the wheels. Those 31's are not fun to lift when your sitting in a tight space and your arms are tired from fighting stuck lug nuts.lol.
Those pads look like they were replacements for a prior set that wore into the rotors. The last person to do them did not hjave the rotors turned and just threw in new pads. I would have them turned at the least, but you probably should replace them.
put new rotors on it. last guy just slapped pads on after he needed brakes for quite a while. unbelieveable that people play with thier lives like that
Looks like you have some kind of leak in the top picture, just looks wet in there and the brake drum in the bottom left looks like it might have some thing leaked into it too. I would check out your axle seals and wheel cylinders. And yeah Stosh is right jack stands are great. Looks like you might be getting ready for some exhaust too, the fun never ends.

I had to use PB blaster to free the brake drum, and I think some of it might have seeped through.I'm gonna replace EVERYTHING on this truck before I even think about driving it,so if it is a leak from the seals,it'll be covered. And yep,the exhaust rusted right off,and the previous owner just ripped it out.
And Stosh,I had to make use of what I had laying around, which was that scissor jack and 2 2x4's.I am definitely gonna get a floor jack before I jack the truck up again.I would never jack a vehicle up if it was unstable.I made sure the jack was stable before I even thought of turning the handle.I got lucky and it worked, and i'm not jacking the truck up again without proper equipment,so it's all good.
Thanks for all the help ya'll.The previous owner did alot of weird things to the truck,so I wouldn't be surprised if he just slapped on some new pads.I also noticed that the bearing caps are all dented up too.I think my truck was an old farm truck or work truck,so the previous owner didn't really care for the truck. He just did whatever to keep it running.
Well I made a trip to the local auto part store to pick up some pb blaster and a new drip pan. While I was at the counter,I decided to see what they had in the computer as far as brakes for my truck is concerned. The guy at the counter luckily knew what he was doing, but we had a hard time chasing down my exact brakes. They list two different GVWR classes, and brakes with manual, and with power.Everytime we found the 5100 GVWR Brakes, they were for Manual. So it looks like i'm gonna have to bring in all my old brake drums, shoes, rotors, pads, and maybe even the calipers,to make sure I get the right stuff.
And on the original topic,I was thinking today, and I was wondering if those inner pads are the wrong ones for the truck?Cause I noticed that before I took the caliper off to get to the pads,it looked like only half the caliper piston was covered by the brake pad.I coulda sworn that the brake pad is supposed to make contact with the entire piston surface. Please correct me if i'm wrong. Thanks for all the help.
What he said!!!!! Get yourself some jack stands, Shaun....
PLEASE follow this advice. If the truck hasn't already fallen on top of you, it will soon. That is a life-ending or crippling injury just waiting to happen. I wouldn't get anywhere near that truck the way you have it jacked up.
Your brakes actually look pretty good. The other guys are right about what caused that in the front. It's not as big of a deal as it looks, but those grooves are way too deep to machine. You will need new rotors.

Guys, jacking the truck up like that was a one time thing.Never once was I under the truck, and as soon as I checked the brakes, the wheels went back on,and the truck was put back on the ground. The truck wasn't up in the air for more than 20 minutes at a time.Normally I would use my neighbor's 3 ton floor jack and jackstands, but he's out of town for the month.I am gonna invest in my own jack and jackstands before I jack the truck up again.

Yea I thought the same thing.I can trust the rear brakes, but not the fronts. But i'm planning on replacing everything in the braking system,so I was already planning on replacing the rotors. Thanks for all the help and concern ya'll.
I have seen brakes FAR worse than yours, buy some new rotors or J-yard a good pair.
Main point here................PLEASE! go out to Harbor Freight and buy some jack stands before anything else!..........The truck WILL KILL YOU if it comes off that jack, or at very least amputate a hand or leg!......Observe the safety factor always, even if its just a "quick one time" thing.
Yea,I'm sure there's brakes a thousand times worse, but I still wouldn't drive the truck down the road with the brakes on it now.
And as previously stated, before those tires on that truck leave the ground again,I am going to invest in a new set of jack stands and a floor jack.
I thank ya'll for the concern, but as the bold print states,I am not jacking up the truck again until it has a set of jackstands and a stable floor jack under it.
