I am seriously thinking about converting my 66 ford 4x4 tuck with a c-6 tranny to a aod tranny if there is such a way to do so.Does anybody know if an aod was ever offered for a fe engine in a 4x4 truck? Is there an adapter that can be used?
To the best of my knowledge, the AOD was never offered behind an FE engine. I'm almost certain the AOD didn't crop up until the early eighties, and the FE series was discontinued in the mid seventies. I would consider this to be a commonly desired combination, however, so I would call up Advanced Adapters. If anyone would have an adapter plate for these two parts, it'd be them.
You might run into another problem, though. The AOD is a relatively light duty transmission, and it might not be up to the task of handling a 360, and it almost certainly would have a shorter life behind a 390, 427, or 428.
There are numerous companies, (Art Carr, Jet Performance, B&M come to mind) that build super AOD's or sell parts to beef up the AOD that you could call up and ask about the best approach for your application. There is an article in the tech section about an overdrive conversion for a Bronco. While not an F-100, this article could still come in handy as it hits briefly on the new super AOD he got for his Bronco.
