84 F350 front end

I found an 84 F350 on Craigslist for $500. Its in great shape except for the fact that it doesn't have an engine. My biggest question was what front end would come stock in this truck? I thought it was a dana 50, but I wasn't sure. Also, if it is a d50, how strong are these axles? I wouldn't be putting big wheels on it, but it would have to handle a lot of weight.

Could be a 44 or a 50. The 50 was an option, and some people say standard on the extended cabs. The 50 is known to be "good enough" for regular use, but is not known as a "strong" axle.

It could also be a Dana 60.

The axle alone is worth the asking price.

D60 were not available till late 85. It is a D50 the 44 was only in the light duty F250 and f150.

The D50 will take all the weight the truck can take. Alignment is always an issue w these axles but i have never heard of breaking one. I have a 80 F350 w a D50 in the front i truck pull with . It has a mildly warmed over 429 and i have pulled it for the past 10 years. That is the only thing in the driveline that has not broke!

Dana 50 TTB is not worth the aggrivation. Swap a Dana 60 in there if you get the truck. TTB axles are a pain to align and anything with ball joints is pointless in a heavy truck.Only thing I've ever consistently broke/worn out on a D50 is ball joints. They just don't last. D44 TTB are junk though, I've broken many axle shafts in those, stripped splines, busted u-joints, etc. Avoid the D44 TTB, they aren't worth their weight in scrap.

Ok cool. I'm glad to see that people haven't had a lot of issues with them. I know all about the d44. I had a d44 TTB in my pulling truck for 1 season. trashed it. Right now i am in the process of swapping in a solid dana44. Yes, I know, I should buy a dana 60, but the 44 was free, and I am in college so money is tight.

I am not so sure about the light duty thing in the 80-86 trucks. I can only vouch for the 87-up trucks, and the regular duty f250's came with a dana 44 ttb. My 89 has the diesel engine, the full floating rear axle, and a original dana 44ttb.

People who seem to know what they are talking about say the extended cabs were the only ones that got the dana 50ttb, and I have heard of some trucks with a "snow fighter" package with the dana 50 frontend.

I have a D44 on my diesel 250, and the Sterling rear. My dad's 84 ext cab has the D50... Also have the D44 under the 88 with the 351, heavy rear...

The F350's 80-85 were D50 only, 85.5-97 were D60 only.
The F250's OTOH, on a reg cab, the 44HD TTB was standard until 92 or so, with the 50 being a max GAWR(snow plow package etc) option. Didn't matter if it was a LD or over 8500 GVWR HD, or what engine, the 44 was still standard.
The ex cabs got the 50 by default after 84, as prior to 84 the ex cab long bed 8800 GVWR truck was badged as an F350, Ford made no other changes than a 2 in place of the 3 for the 84+ trucks.
In the pictures in the 83 brochure, there is some really goofy stuff... There's an F350 crew 4x4 with a 44TTB and what looks to be a SF 60 rear... LOL
Nothing is really set in stone with these trucks, but, general rules sort of apply.
