I have a 78 F-150 4x4, 351M/C6. From what I can tell, that means it has the NP 203 trnsfer case. I have a rebuilt engine, rear end, and basically new driveshafts (the tubes were bent, ended up with almost all new all around). So, I think I'm commited to what I have as I doubt there's a market for what I paid for the driveshafts.
Anyhow, I've been reading the boards here for awhile and notice there's a lot of different opinions as far as whether or not you can swap (direct bolt-in) an AOD with a C-6 because the NP203 won't bolt up, or use the transfer case that matches up with the AOD but the driveshafts are different. Is that true? Ideally I'd like an AOD to get a little bit better than 11 mpg I get now, but don't want to completely negate any savings by going huge on the expenses of the conversion or buying new parts I've replaced already (ie, the driveshafts).
I forgot, the reason I'm looking into this is that the C-6 is starting to slip and will need rebuilt, so if I'm going to fork out money one way or another, I might as well look at an upgrade in the process.
