Ok, I'm in the market for a 10 year old-ish truck. I want to try a Ford. I need something that will pull a 2horse trailer (5000 lbs loaded). This truck also needs to be my primary vehicle so I can't get a gas hog. So, I'm looking at a 1/2 ton with 5.4 engine. I tried 3 trucks yesterday and all three knocked. The salesmen said all 5.4 engines knock. One of the trucks sounded really bad. I absolutely loved everything else about the truck, but that knocking scares me. My brother has a 5.4 triton and his does NOT knock. What is the word on this? Thanks.
Sorry for the late reply...the "buying" forum is pretty inactive.
If you start browsing & searching through the F-150 (both the '97 - '03 & 2004+) & Super Duty forums, you will found countless threads for ticking of the valve train on the 5.4L modular motors.
There are some quiet ones out there. But, I would willing to bet that there are more with the tick than without it.
The problem is in verifying that it is the general 5.4L "tick" or a bona fide "knock" which could be indicative of other problems.
