steering problems

having some problems with the front end of my truck. its a 1999 ford f250 7.3. for the most part it drives straight but when i go to turn the wheel gets hard to hold on to and shakes back and forth, it does this some times also when just driving straight. it doesnt happen all the time and i just replace the tierod and it seemed to get better but still happens. any idea's? when it does start acting up i pull over and cut the wheel hard and it goes away for alittle bit. all the other joints and everything seem to look fine from what i can see. could it be the power steering gear? any help would be great

Give us a little more info on your truck and it's shakes...2 or 4 wheel drive, power or manual steering, speed when happens, sharp slow turns or highway gentle turns, etc. Is the shaking more in the steering wheel or the whole truck? Could be just about anything including the steering gearbox or PS pump. The better the specifics the better the answers to help you.

it is a 4x4 and powersteering. the entire truck shakes and turns itself. it has happened at any speed really but is the worst around turn that are kind of sharp or really sharp turning either way. hasnt really acted up on little slight turns like switching lanes on the highway but it has happened once.

It sounds like you have the same problem I have/had. Check out my marathon thread; https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ml#post7258745

How is the power steering? Does it make any noise? Can you turn the wheel lock to lock while stopped with the foot off the brake? Does the PS atf smell burnt?

I replaced the pump about 3 weeks ago and it has been fine so far. Does your pump seem low on pressure? It is the same problem because you can make it go away by stopping and moving the wheel back and forth. I think the PS box does it but the pump causes it.

got the new steering pump, new tie rod and a alignment and it seems to have gone away. there is still alittle play in the steering wheel thought which i am guessing is the steering box. ill get to that some other time since it isn't to bad. thanks alot EXv10 for all of your help

Dan, Mine is still good too. You can adjust the steering box for slop.
