Any last minute advice (Hellwig Install)?

I ordered a Hellwig antisway for my X when JCW had the 20% off sale on Memorial Day - scored it for $155. Anyhow, I'll be installing that puppy this weekend (hopefully). I read the included instructions trying to make out the poor pictures without much luck. So I've been reading up on other posts concerning the install. I think I have a clearer picture of how to git-r-done, but I thought I would post for any new info that may be available.

The best instructions I found so far are from Bob Barry - he posted some good instructions, with pics, in his gallery. Great job Bob! 2000 Ford Excursion 4x4 - Excursion Suspension Upgrades

Torque it to spec or it will drive you crazy with clunking.

I just did my '04 this past weekend, same deal. And the biggest hurdle was just going out and doing it. It's not as duanting as you may think. But a word of advice. Watch the install video on the website. It explains a little on how to put it together with all of the pieces. Good luck and I'm sure you love it! Oh yea. Tie off the shocks into place. They like to extend and are a pain to put back in the right place.

Mark,

In addition to my suggestion on removal of the shocks from the lower mounts to ease aligning the shock mount with the U-bolt...Hellwig just tells you to unbolt the U-bolt and leave the shocks attached to the mount...after I fought this for longer than necessary...I simply unbolted the shocks from the lower mount...and walla...much easier...

But the other item I forgot to mention to you...

On my 2005 Ex setup... Hellwig sent me a 1/2" U-bolt to go around the axle and replace the factory U-bolt that holds the lower shock mounts...you need a slightly longer U-bolt that they supply...but I found that my factory U-bolt was a 3/8" bolt and the Hellwig was a 1/2"...hmmm...so I had to drill out my lower shock mounts to the larger diameter...no big deal...just didn't expect it that's all...no where in the install instructions did it mention that and to be honest...not many on here have run into that...so I don't know if I just got a fluky setup?...

The install really wasn't that bad...I know you have done your RAS so this will be a piece of cake after that...just take your time.

Good luck and keep us informed!

You will have to let us know if you notice any difference with the Hellwig since you already have the RAS...it will be good campfire chatter in Gatlinburg!

Joe.

I got mine on and I have the clunking....It did not come with the acorn nuts that I thought had to be torqued...I have the self locking nuts...What should they be torqued at and will this solve the clunkin?
Thanks

I had to drill out the lower shock mounts as did Joe, but the three hole adapter plate that attaches to the shock mount was drilled too small so the 1/2" U-bolt wouldn't go through the 7/16" holes. I called Hellwig and they immediately sent me the proper plates.

I just called Hellwig and the tech told me to torque the U bolts to about 80lbs....He said the the bolts that attach to the frame are to be tightened to where the bushings start to bulge then stop...Same on the bottom where the bolt goes through the sway bar...tighten to where they start to bulge...I am still getting the clunking sound...I didn't have it before the Hellwig...
