if a truck is driven the same for both, will a shift kit increase mpg? also which book is better, a '78 ford manual or a 80-90 haynes manual for a c6 in a 84 f-250?
A shift kit will increase your gas mileage due to less slippage in between shifts but not enough to notice. It will improve transmission life possibly at the expense other drivetrain components. I don't personally like haynes manuals and have never read a ford manual. I do know the haynes don't go very far into transmission work.
I have used shift kits twice in my 25+ years of driving.
Shiftkits can improve mileage, and durability. they can also cause parts to break if they are marginial or the kit is too extreme.
I used a shift kit in an old 67 Dodge Charger I hot rodded. Tons of fun and would shift when I told it to.
When my 94 F250 started shifting hard and having torque shudder, due to my stupidity(didn't check fluid level before a tow) I took it into a tranny shop and told them make it bullet proof for towing. They included a shift kit since it would increase the durability of the tranny and save a tiny amount of gas. Now the truck shifts hard all the time.
