Hey guys I got my vacume leak fixed and was trying to get my timing set but I could not turn the dizzy with the engine at operating temp. I shut it off and let it cool down for about an hour. When I went to try to start it back up my starter started acting weird. I know sometimes the bendix doesnt engage and the starter just spins free but this was different. It was like the flywheel was turning but not the motor. I had the hood up and watched the motor as I tried to start it. The motor would kinda shake back and forth like it normally does when starting it but I could see the fan ( mecanical with out a clutch) and it wasnt turning, Its like the backend of the motor was turning over but not the front. Is this even possible or does anyone have any idea what is happening?
Could be a bad cam, or timing chain broke. I am going to assume you have the 300-6. The timing gear on the front of the cam is a fiber material from the factory and are prone to stripping teeth. But, if it looked to be cranking and the fan wasn't turning, could be a broken crank.
Always fix the obvious stuff first. If you know you have a starter problem, then replace it.
I just replaced the starter and it usually works fine unless it is hot. I think I am gonna take it to get it tested though.

I have a 255 v8, would that still apply to this motor? How would I know if I have a broken crank?
First, have some one crank the motor while you look at the front of engine.
Is the belts turning? If not, the pull the plugs and see if air is coming out of all the holes, if not all, but some, then broken crank.
If the the front drive is not turning but air is coming out of all the holes, then the snout of the crank that drives the cam and front accessory drive is broke, still a broke crankshaft.
Also pull the dizzy cap and see if the rotor is turning. Let us know the results to go from there.
Well I think im just gonna push it down the hill into the lake and see how long it takes to sink!!!! I bought this truck about 8 months ago and I have spent more time working on it than driving it.
