97 psd no power while towing

I just recently purchased a 1997 7.3l crew cab in Feb. It's the first diesel I've owned. It's got 173,000 on it. I installed a bigger exhaust system and gauges. Last weekend I towed a 18ft car trailer loaded with 3 ATV's through the black hills in SD. I could barely go 40mph up these hills. 5psi was the max boost she was putting out. Without a trailer I get 15psi wot. It runs nice and seems to get up and go fairly decent. But when I'm pulling something it's a dog. I talked to a diesel tech and he said replace the ebs sensor, but from what I read on the forums here alot of guys unplug this. So I wouldn't think that should matter. Need some help please.

Have you changed the fuel and air filters? Something else to look at is inside the fuel filter housing, on the right side as you're looking at it, there is a hole for fuel to go out. Inside that hole about a half inch is a small screen that can sometimes get plugged up. 2 ways to clean it. One way is to remove the fuel filter and open the drain valve on the housing and let the fuel run out. When doing this make sure you are in gravel or have something under the truck to catch the fuel. You'll loose about a quart. Then, with the drain valve still open get a can of wd-40, or something similar, one with a straw on the nozzle, and clean out that screen. Make sure you clean out the fuel filter housing too. Close the drain, fill the housing up with diesel fuel, leave enough room for the filter, and install the fuel filter. The other method is to take a 10mm wrench and unbolt the block from the right side of the housing and seperate it from the housing. You can then remove the screen and clean it. There is an o-ring in there so be carefull to not damage it or loose it.

A good scan gauge should point you in the right direction but you can try this....
Check the MAP sensor on the firewall. It has a small rubber line going to it from the intake manifold. The rubber line may have pin hole in it or may be plugged. You may have 'tied-in' your boost gauge to it? Also look for boost leaks around the turbo and the "Y" pipe boots.
An exhaust leak may cause this too, look for black soot from the exhaust manifolds all the way to where they connect to the back side of the turbo. The firewall behind it may have soot on it too.

Cleaning the screen will allow fuel to get to the heads. The first time I cleaned the screen on my 97, I was surprised it even ran.

Air trapped in the primary filter is vented back to the tank through a bleed on top of the fuel filter housing. The removed air is routed through a wire mesh screen to prevent plugging, followed by a 0.035 inch orifice.
