OK I HAVE NEVER SEEN A FORD REAR DISASSEMBLED. I HAVE WORKED ON GM CARS WHERE POSI UNIT IS EASILY INDENTIFIED BY VISIBLE CLUTCHES OR CONES. I AM ATTEMPTING TO PURCHASE A USED 9 INCH CENTER SECTION AND NEED TO KNOW SURE WAY TO ID AS TRAC LOC OR OPEN AS EVERY DIAGRAM I SEE FOR FORD REARS (ACTUAL DIFFERENTIAL) THEY ARE SEALED AND LOOK IDENTICAL. ARE THERE HOLES IN REAR SO I CAN SEE CLUTCH PACKS VS OPEN REAR. PLEASE DON'T ASK ME TO SPIN TIRES 3RD MEMBER IS OUT OF CAR. THANKS I DON'T WNAT TO LOOK STUPID WHEN I SHOW UP TO ID.
On an open, that surface is flat all the way around.
On a trac-loc, the ring gear bolts fit into counterbores. Additionally, trac-locs have two parts splined to one of the (driver's side?) axle shafts- side gear and clutch pack hub.

I was told to look at the mounting bolts that hold the ring gear. On a trac-loc the bolts should be recested around the housing holding the gear. On a open, they are flush. Both my 9" trac locs are like this, plus you should have 4 spider gears. This might be a little vague but everyone I spoke with agrees.
