true diesel

I am in the for my first diesel truck. I have been looking at the fords 2000-2003 7.3l power stroke diesels. I was talking to a guy and he was saying that the power strokes was a gas moter converted to a diesel motor. I have been looking on the net to find out with no luck, so I figure I would post up and see what you guys have to say. Thanks

i would have a hard time beleaving that the 7.3 is a gas motor that was converted.these motors are built heavy and tough.i think they weigh in at 950lbs or something like that.ive never seen a gas motor that heavy.i do no that the chevy diesel's were converted gas motors so maybe he has them mixed up.

Edit: the motor in these trucks are built by international not ford..

mr thinks you should go back and kick him in the n--shins! GM tried that in the 80's, didn't work then or now. I'm trying to remember when International made their last gas motor. would have probably gone away about the same time the Scout II and the Travelall went away. any body remember those tanks? Ford PSD were built by International. Deisel from inception to conception.

yes, he was thinking of the old Chevy diesels, not the Powerstroke.

The 7.3L Powerstroke has the power and reliability you'll want out of a diesel. If that isn't enough, I think it was last year, Diesel Power magazine voted the 7.3L one of the best diesel motors ever made.

The 7.3 is an International Engine. It is classified as a meduim duty engine. It is not a converted gas job.

Oh and welcome to FTE.

I was in a little Mexican restaraunt in Willis last week picking up some lunch. As I was waiting for my food, a guy in a lifted Dodge Cummins (a nice one) parked next to me and came inside. As he comes through the door he spies me and asks, "Is that your 7.3 out there?". When I told him that yes, it was mine, he said that he loves the 7.3 PSDs and considers them to be the best diesel motors ever made.

That, from a Cummins man.

He said ford and chevy were converted and that the cummins was a true diesel because it is a six cylinder and that diesels were six cylinder. The guy is an automotive mechanic that I have been knowing for 29years but I don't believe half of what he says. I was wondering if what he is saying is true. I didn't think it was a converted diesel.

Rumor has it that the 6.9 was slightly based on a perkins industrial motor... however, that has never been proven. Looks from the outside are similar, but thats it. The person who said that the I-6 ***-a-part is a *real* diesel because of the inline configuration must not count diesel locomotives as real because they are V style... Some people...

number of cyl has nothing to do with it. Detriot diesel had 4 cyl with superchagers even 12 cyl with blowers! Cummins even has a 4 cyl in some small UPS/ dedlivery vans. your "mechanic" friend should stick with what he knows. not feed you full of misinformation. stick around here and it won't be long before you can teach him a thing or two about "true" diesels.
