Highway Patrol

So as a few of you know, I had a small run-in with the Tennessee Highway Patrol on Friday. I pulled into a gas station, noticed there were 4 Unicoi County Cops and 1 State Trooper. I went in used the ATM and on my way out stopped and talked to one of the deputies. Got back into my truck (still not buckled up) backed out. I am driving thru the parking lot. I stop make sure there is nothing coming, look in the rearview mirror and see the black and tan Excursion of the THP. Then pull out onto the highway drive about 15 feet and he bluelights me.
His reason for pulling me over was no seat belt, then he asks the dreaded question "does this thing have a muffler on it" OH CRAP what do i say "well no sir it doesnt"."Well its louder than my neighbors semi" he says. So i say "thats because your neighbor hasnt been smart enough to take them off yet" So at this point he becomes a huge jerk about the whole deal so now i have $10 dollar fine for no seat belt, and a Fix-It Ticket for the muffler. I really dont want to put a muffler on, Does anyone have any suggestions?????? TIA

well first off, it helps not to try to be a jerk, and second you could do what alot of people due with there cat converters, cut one open and empty out any baffles or anything like that and run a pipe through it weld it back together and throw it on.

I actually meant it as a joke i wasn't trying to be a jerk. He had asked if i had a reason for not wearing my seat belt, and i told him about a friend of mine that had been trapped in a car during a crash and was burned up besause he had his seat belt on. And i also added that i knew to him that probably wasnt a good reason, but that was the decision i made.

For every "trapped and burned up" story, half of which are made up, there are probably 3 or 4 THOUSAND "ejected and crushed/blunt-force trauma/run over by 2nd vehicle deaths every year.

Wear your seat belt, be polite and business like and follow the rules when the law is present, and at all times if that's not too much to ask, and put a muffler on your truck, as people miles away don't want to hear it anymore than some on this forum want to hear your crying about this experience.

Sympathy? Look between S... and syphilus in the dictionary.

Other than than, no opinion......

Yeah what they all said. You seem ike a real nice fella simply trying to make lite of your run in with the THP. These guys / gals don't have a sense of humor with the people that thue are sworn and entrusted to serve and protect. They save that for the office and when they are in and around other members of thier peer group.

Please, be courtious, polite and accomodating at all times with all LEO's.

get a cheap muffler from the junk yard. make a slit cut along one side and each end. wrap it around your pipe under the truck and weld it back. it will look like a muffler is on there, but is a fake. that way, next time, you can say, "why, yes sir, I do"

Well Ray, not to sound like a smartazz, but put a muffler on it. Not much I can add to the above comments. One thing I will tell you though is that the trooper, and now his co-workers, will see your truck as a bullseye for tickets now. I will tell you from experience, that once we see something like that and it's not corrected, it will generate tickets until it is. Good luck with it. Also, the above statement was correct regarding the seatbelts. There are on occasion, wrecks in which a seatbelt caused a fatality, but there are hundreds of thousands more where they saved a life. A good friend of mine died earlier this year in an ice storm when his vehicle rolled over and he was ejected because he wasn't wearing it. Personally, I'll take my chances wearing it.

Personally I understand not having a muffler on it, its a popular thing back at the 73-79 forum. And as far as the seatbelt goes, I'm goin to take my "chances" and where. If you are goin down the highway at 75 mph hit the ditch without a seatbelt the least of your worries are going to be burning up up cause you will most likley have been ejected out the windshield and be laying 75 yards from the crash that is now burning.

in all my years in EMS I know of one death from a seat belt, it was an old man in a head on collision and the belt crushed his chest, he would have died without it just as fast! I have seen many (not putting a number here as it would look like an exaggeration ) of people dead or paralyzed or wishing they were dead from not wearing their seat belt.
as for the muffler I would put one on or you will be targeted from now on for it.

I thought by now that everyone knew the police are & have been on a nationwide seat belt campain over the holiday. I must of seen 50 ads on TV. I know of several people that would be alive today if they had a seat belt on. They have saved my life once. I walked away without a scratch.
As for a muffler install a 5" exhaust with a muffler. I wish the NHP would stop more of these awful loud diesel pickups here.

I have been targeted for tickets since i put the stax on my truck. So i am not the least bit surprised and the muffler problem will be taken care of whenever i get a chance the truck and i are at the beach. I'm not going to put a muffler on, just a dummy, or a flow thru.

Ray,

Maybe they should have approached you before you pulled out, but 5 cops by you and you did it anyway???? You oughtta just hang a sign on your truck that says ticket me, please???????? And the seat belt thing is yuor choice I guess, but with decisions come consequences....wish I could post some pictures here, of accidents, but most people would lose their lunch.....23 years in law enforcement and no pictures of people killed by seat belts!!!!!!

Hope you get it fixed soon so they can move on to someone else.

As a truck driver of over 20 years, i can attest to the fact that i see some LEO's who do not wear their seat belt while traveling down the highway. And i muse, how many seat belt tickets have they written? Whats their excuse?
I'm not trying to justify anything, just making an observation.
