problems

hey folks, got some problems...

So recently i have been having problems starting my truck. When i go to start it after it has been sitting for a bit of time, over night or several hours while im at a movie or something, when i start it it does one of two things.

it either starts and then a half second later drop super low in rpms, nearly stalls then catches itself and is fine the rest of the time im driving it. After the initial problem it has no problems or any kinds of signs of problems.

or

at the start it catches, turns over and runs for a brief moment and then just like senario 1 its rpms drop rather quickly and it completely stalls out. IF this happens i then have to crank it again, which takes longer than normal to start and then i have to remain on the gas for several min to keep it from stalling out again.

Anybody have a clue what is going on and can help me out for this?

thanks guys

Is there an auto zone around where you can get them to pull the diagnostic codes?

Damn Simi Valley... I was thinking to have you bring it to me. I have an OBD II scanner but it doesn't do diesels, works for my 5.4 though. When was the last time you changed the plugs, how is the milleage, what else does it do, does it have a CEL?

Some codes wait a few times before trigering the light too. cylinder misfire for one may not triger a code until a few times.

this has happened like...maybe 5 times, only completely stalled once. so maybe it needs to do it more before it triggers the light, ill see how it acts this week and go from there. Anyone have a clue on what it may be? fuel? plugs? any idea at all?

I'll bet The IAC is carboned up. My 4.6 had the same symptons as yours and that was my solution.

i dont know the last time i replaced the fuel filter so i should do that any how, where is the IAC? and can i clean it with out tearing too much apart? Im pretty sure it isnt the fuel PUMP though cuz its ONLY when i just start the truck. Although i went 2 places tonight and every time i started the truck it was totally fine, no hesitation or stalling whatsoever, so we will see.

thanks guys for all the input, i posted in the 97-03 forums and got nothing!

I don't know where the IAC is on a 5.4, but you should be able to find it by looking for an air path to the trottle body other than the main intake.
