I am planning a MAF swap on my 88 F150 351W. I would like to use a computer from a MAF truck with a E4OD, so I can also swap that trans to my truck. Im pretty sure my HP(around 370 on desktop dyno) will exceed the stock injectors with the other mods to my engine. My first question is will the truck MAF computer adapt to the larger injectors. Also are the truck ECU's compatible with Tweecer? I have researched this topic on this forum, and I cant remember reading anything about this. Thanks, and this is an awesome forum.
Fresh 351 shortblock,Rebuilt GT40P's with RR, Crane 444232 and lifters, Typhoon intake, 24lbs. injectors, longtube headers, 2" duals with flowmasters, MAF conv. E-fan and 3G upgrade. 4.10LS axle swap
I just saw a list of compatible ECU's on Tweecers website, so I suppose Ill take that info to the wreckers. My friend ran the desktop dyno for me and I was surprised to see the numbers that high.
Another thing are calibrated MAF meters a must?
you can reset the maf for the proper injector size with a tweecer. if you want to pay for a new precalibrated one, you can, itll still work but you really dont need it. i dont mean to dampen your day but you will probably fall short of that hp number. keep in mind the lightning 351 with gt40 heads and gt40 intake only made 245 hp. your basically adding more cam to that and a better exhaust. if i was to guess id say around 300hp give or take 20-40hp depending on how well its tuned. your torque however should be near 400 ft lbs.
Yeah those numbers are a bit optimistic, I think it'll break 300 crank hp by a little.. maybe 320hp or so since the P heads work a little better than the regular GT40s and you won't have as restrictive an exhaust as the Lightnings. It takes heads that flow significantly more than the GT40p's to get into the high 300hp range. Here's my DD of the motor with regular GT40s..
Well, thats a bit dissapointing, but its still a major improvement over a stock tired 5.8. That extra torque should be fun. Is the typhoon intake worth the modest cost? If that intake doesnt add a significant increase in torque/HP then I may not use it.
if your going to buy an aftermarket intake i would get the edelbrock efi performer made specifically for the 5.8 ford trucks. ive heard some mixed reviews on the typhoon intake (at least the 5.0 mustang one) but ive heard some real good things about the edelbrock. i think they would both be a big improvement over stock though.
The Typhoon is a Performer copy so it's performance will be essentially identical. On the copy I have the exterior finish isn't quite up to Edelbrock standards so I did some cleanup on a few areas and had it powdercoated crinkle black, it still hasn't cost me what the Eddy does. The machine work looks very good not at all like some others I have seen and read about, and there's lots of meat in the casting for porting as well. Either of these are a significant upgrade over the stock 5.8 truck intake and will support into the 350hp range.
wow, that looks good conanski. someone i know bought a chinese copy typhoon intake and wasnt impressed with it. much better than the unit installed on his car. i suppose it all comes down to paying attention to where things come from.
All these Typhoons are Chinese, I'm thinking they have stepped up quality on the later stuff compared to when they first appeared a couple years ago. The one I have is the satin finish.. basically just as it comes out of the molds with only a basic cleanup. There was some casting ridge and a few cosmetic surface defects on the upper portion.. which was the reason I decided to paint it, but the lower is beautiful. I think I will be doing some port matching to the heads when I install this.. though I'd probably be doing that regardless what intake I had. Here's the lower beside the 5.8 truck lower.
That typhoon really does look good. I cant see paying for an Edelbrock when this intake should perform essentialy the same. Thanks for the pics. Conanski. You sold me.
Over on the NLOC boards there is a guy making custom cold air kits for 1st gen lightnings. reminds me of the anderson pipe for mustangs. It would look and perform awesome on a truck with a car intake.
with maf you can run a bigger cam come on!.. thats a torker cam... try the 35-351-8 Comp cams

the crane is gr8 but its so low it will work with speed density .. i think when upgrading upgrade to the max.. or let it stock..
thats just me tough
I planned on staying with SD when I bought the Crane cam. I was fortunate to fall into a little cash, so I am going a little farther with the mods then originally planned.
Typhoon intakes are made by Professional Products, and most Napa parts stores can order them for you. They are available for the 302.
