ok i got into my 01 250sd yesterday and noticed the check engine light is on, is there way i can check the codes befor i bring it to m y mechanic.. i know you use to be albe to use a paper clip and stick it in the 2 ports under the dash on my older car witch was not a ford, does anyone know if u can do that with my truck.... and if i can can someone give me some guidance on how to do it in this truck
thanks guys
What engine do you have? If its a gasser, you should be able to take it to a local parts store like Advance, checkers, or O'Reillys and have them scan it. If its a diesel, they don't have the right scan tool to get the ford power train codes that diesels have. If you had a program like Autoenginuity with the ford pack you could scan it your self. Is the truck doing something specifically that would trip the check engine light?
sorry its a 5.4l gasser well it just came on yesterday but i have noticed over the last week or so its sluggish off the line, it doesent have the pep it use to have and when i start in the morning its hesitant at first but always starts up
No. They do it so they can sell you parts. Same with AutoZone (except California).
Write down the fault code(s) - Pxxxx where xxxx is a four digit code.
Tell them you're going to "check it out".
Leave.
Come back here and plug the fault codes into the SEARCH feature. There are common ones that get asked every week.
If you can't find a relevant post or description, ask (post the codes you have).
