I'm also looking for info on the Brown Lipe and Spicer Aux transmissions. Looks like this thread has died though. Email me at (without spaces) ogresemail @ chartermi.net is you have any information on this subject. Thanks, Ogre.
"I could talk about these Brown-lipes for ever as I have been researching these things for years and have quite a collection of them. I hope this info is of some help to you. If you like, You can reach me at (Click Here...).

Unfortunately I don't have the links anymore, but several companies still stock parts and even remanufactured Brown-Lipe gearboxes. If you Google for heavy truck transmission rebuilders or something similar you'll find something. I even got some price quotes emailed back to me. Sorry I threw it all out, you never know what'll be useful... Ogre.
The brown lipe that you have is an auxiliary transmission. In a 4x4 application it would have to install between the main transmission and the transfer case. This is only possible if you have a separate transfer case form you transmission. you will have to remove your transfer case and move it further to the rear and install the brown lipe then reinstall the transfer case with a shorter drive shaft to the rear and a longer to the front. this is a lot of work. ALSO... The brown lipe is a low gear and a direct gear ONLY. Installing this would only gain you a lower gear and not give you an overdrive. I have dealt with alot of brown lipes andI have yet to see one that was not 0.81 and 1.00 in a two speed.
There is plenty of room for confusion because of the long history of auxiliary transmissions. Brown Lipe is an old company that was purchased by Spicer at some point in time that is unknown to me. I believe Spicer operated Brown Lipe as a division, still using the Brown Lipe name.
My Father's Brownie was the two-speed that chuck78757 is describing. It was a small auxiliary transmission -- probably the only one that really was sized to a half-ton pickup. It was specifically designed to be mounted either way and hence could be used as either an overdrive or as an underdrive -- my Dad used it as an overdrive behind a straight 3-speed and then later as an underdrive behind a 3-speed/OD.
I've been restoring pickup trucks for a few years now, I'm semi retired and was once a Parts man for a major parts distributor. I've learned the hard way since leaving to company that certain people don't really want you to find out that you can get 0.63 to 1 ratio or 0.73 or 0.81 or 0.87 to 1 ratio because 0.63 would get you at least 27% better fuel milage.
_ It's kinda like those 7,000 patents for devices that get over 100 mpg that now belong to big oil companies instead of the old boy who built it on his work bench after sacrificing 1,000s of hours of his life to try and help mankind. But instead big oil bought it out, some times with threats and force so they could control the patent and hide it away and charge you $5.00 or $10.00 a gallon !
_ There is a box called a Ranger 2spd over: Gear Venders has one that does under and over drive, you can get a kit to build a two under and 1 over out of the gear portion of an old NP203 Transfer case from a 4X4.
The Watson, Browny, Spicer, Atlas, New Process, are out there but you have to get on a web site like Street Cruzin or My Old Truck or 6066 GMC Guy to be able to talk to folks. I have a lot of info if you find me.
And then there is the story of the guy that installed a 2-speed rearend in his 4x4 ... He kept wondering why it dug the front end in the sand in four-wheel ...
True story ... Happened in 29 Palms Cali ... 1975 ... He had a rack in the next quanset hut ...
I know this thread is old but for future reference the above unit is not a brown lipe. I went down this road as well. What you have is really a 2 speed underdrive watson trans.
