Ok, I am needing to put wheel bearings on the front of my truck. 1977 4x4 F150. Is there a special tool required to remove the inner workings to get to the bearings? Any hints to make this go easier would be appreciated.
There is an inner and outer nut, with a lock washer in between. Use the socket to remove the outer nut, then remove the lock washer, then use the socket to remove the inner nut, and the whole hub will come off.
You can pick one of those sockets up at just about any auto parts store. Just make sure to get the one specific to your application. There are a few variations...
Thanks for the replies. When I took my wheel off I can grab ahold of the hub and move it up and down so she is parked till this weekend till I can do it. I have done a lot of 2wd's but have never taken a 4wd hub apart before.
One of these days, when its time for front axle u-joints, I found this tool helpful for removing the spindle. If its been a while since its been off, you can really spend some time with a hammer & a block of wood breaking it free. But this tool and a slide hammer and its easy.
