I have a 1990 Ford F250 81k miles e4od trans that shifts smooth when cold. Once it gets to op temp it shifts very hard only from 2 to 3 and 3 to 4th gear. 1 to 2nd gear always shifts smooth. Possible solenoid pack?
the harsh shifts can be as a result of sticking accumulator valves in the valve body. The accumaltor valves on a E40D are in there own section the first portion of the valvebody towards the front of the trans no checkballs to worry about drop pan remove filter and rectangular shaped frt portion of valvebody by using a pick tool the valves should move freely if stuck theres your trouble other things can cause harsh shifts but unlikely to be soleniod pack
The acumulator valves is the fist place to look for your sympton. The oil is thicker when cold and the valves will function as they are supposed to but when hot they may hang up . again there are other causes for hard shifts but they would entail having to remove and dissasseble trans. exsesive wear in the clutch packs can cause hard shifting. drop pan and inspect overall condition if the trans is toast you will know by smell and condition of fluid and by contaminits in the pan if it all doesnt look to bad maybee you can simply clean the accumulator valves and make it happy
