so, the husband bought a equus 4977 code reader from somebody...works (we think) but there are no directions...there is not a test\hold button on this code reader...anybody know how to use this thing so we can read the codes?
The EQUUS website doesnt provide the manual for this reader. I am not sure what my code reader at home is but I cant look at it due to me being at work. This may be a dumb question but how has he used it so far?
he hasn't used it--at least not effectively..he's been trying to figure out how to make the stupid thing work...we're attempting the paperclip test now...but the only thing the reader shows on the display is 000 or 00..
KOEO - connect reader to big black plug and small gray one, turn key to run, press "on" button on reader, press "test" button on reader (the relays should clatter and fuel pump should run at this point), wait for codes
KOER - same except start engine rather than just turning key to run
there isn't a test button...that's the problem...there is an on\off button and a memory button with a reset button hidden in between the two..we ended up doing the paperclip test which did give me codes that can help...we got a code for the egr valve..which we're trying to work on now...

Sorry, that was for the 3145 I have. It looks like yours will capture the codes as they come out, but you still need to initiate the tests "by hand". Try the paperclip method as described on fordfuelinjection.com with the tester connected.
there are some things i will never understand the these trucks are definitely one of them...so replaced the egr sensor--took the oxygen sensor off because we're getting ready to put a new one in, but riddle me this...why is it that we haven't gotten the first o2 sensor code? with the o2 sensor removed the codes are 111...system pass...did i mention the truck still runs like crap and stalls on acceleration? idles fine still though
yes, the engine was warmed up...we knew the o2s need to be replaced...it was missing one of them all together...it is a 92 eddie bauer 5.0 302...we have replaced almost every sensor we can think of..if you'll check the "he needs help" post there's a list of everything we've done....but the cel has gone off and it's not reading any codes anymore...still runs like crap...better than it did...but not right
if you talk real sweet to the fellas at equus they will manage to generate a copy of just about any manual you need...like the one for ours...they e-mailed me a copy of the manual...just thought i'd let you guys know..if you can't talk sweet to them...let your wife do it...see we are good for something

Sweet talk will usually do it. Or go to their site and download it (if they still have them there, they used to, All my scanners and diagnostics are Snap On and others, stopped using Equus a long time ago). But you're right, my ex had the sweet talk down and could talk people out of stuff they shouldn't have.
