Ok, here is the deal, I have a '88 F150 with a '89 FI 460 in it. It currently has an oil leak that appears to be coming from above the oil filter. I have checked the filter, it is tight, as is the drain plug. There seems to be a large bolt on the side of where the oil filter mounts up to, what is this and could it be my leak? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
chances are its the valve cover gasket. the corners on these valve covers are prone to start leaking. just pull the valve cover put a new gasket down. Hammer the edge where the bolts go through flat. and torque them back down to ford spec and problem solved. LIKELY.
The 460 has the angled oil filter adapter, right? If so, it could be leaking from the bolt that attaches the adapter to the block. Is that the large bolt you mentioned?
There is probably an o-ring or crush washer or something under there that can be replaced to restore the seal. I really don't know much about that setup, other than it exists. You should be able to fix it without having to drain the oil, although a little will drain from the oil galleys when the adapter is removed.
the easiest way to find out where its coming from is to clean the engine and its underside with some kind of degreaser and pressure wash it or at least take a hose to it. then let it dry. Afterwords let your truck run for a few minutes enough to let it get a lil ways up as far as temp. then shut it off and see if you can tell where its coming from. The Valve covers and rear main are a common spot they leak from.
