i have a 1995 f150 manual inline 6. i am currently stationed in ramstein air base germany and i am looking to upgrade my truck. here are my plans so far:
-4" lift
-bushwacker fender flares
-33 or 35" tires (havent decided yet)
-split headman headers, true dual pipes
-k&n intake (already installed)
-cams, lifters etc, typical engine mods
here is my problem:
i have heard that lifting a truck and getting larger tires can cause drivetrain problems due to axel ratio. is this true? if so what axle ratio should i go with? any help is greatly appreciated.
im running 31" on my 90 with the straight 6 and dont notice any problems. i have seen a lot of them running 33" but im sure if you go to 35" you will have to regear, unless you want to go uphill max out at 50 mph. you would have to gear for something in the really high 400,s or even go to 500.s theres a math way to figure out what gear ratio you need to go to depending on the tire size, to put you back where you were when you started. you also have to figure the extra weight of the bigger tires. i have a 55 ****** jeep with 5:38 gears and 33s, i can cruise right along, but i also have a warn overdrive.
I'm running 35's on mine with 3.55's, but the 4.9 makes good low end torque so I don't have much trouble, 'cept for bigger hills on the interstate in OD. Plowing and hard wheeling is as simple as pulling the lever back into low-range. But I still get decent mileage considering.
I do have a chrysler 9.25 rear with 4.56's and a limited slip I wanna swap in, but don't have the $ for the front gearset yet.
if you are going 33's with an inline 6 and a 5 speed dont waste your time or money to regear...the charts and calculators only factor in tire size and gear ratios they do not consider the engine and a 300 has more then enough torque to turn 33's and any rpm with 3.55s....trust me my uncles 96 does it...300 5 speed 33's 3.55s and he quite often pulls a 23' fifth wheel camper with that...or a quad...and sometimes both, up and down the logging trails in the rockies...did no hurt his performance at all
