What do I need to do to put a transfer case on the tail end of my M5OD in my 2wd truck? Please say it's a bolt on!
Also, any recomendations on a transfer case? NP 205? BW1345? I plan to use the truck to drive in the mountains in winter and maybe take the occasional trip down a logging road in the summer. Nothing crazy like rock crawling or mud drag racing or anything. I just need something to put power to the front end when needed.
it is not a bolt on conversion.
I did mine, you need to get the rear tranny housing for a 4x4 and also change the main shaft of the tranny.
The 2x4 mainshaft is a little longer, and has 29 spline, the 4x4 has 31.
I spent about 450 for the parts.
The junk yards wanted 800 - 1200 bucks for a 4x4 tranny that was guaranteed, but I knew the history of mine so it was worth it to change it over.
It took me about a day to disassemble and reassemble it. not really that hard.
you could do it rather easily with a divorced np205, doesn't bolt to the tranny but uses a short driveshaft to connect the two, then all you would have to worry about is fabbing up a crossmember, and driveshafts.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-May-02 AT 02:04 AM (EST)]another idea would be a Klune-V under drive box bolts right up to the tranny tail shaft and they work great. They also come in a various ratios
I don't know if it is worth that much money to convert a mazda over...i was thinking about it for my 4x4 project, and for 1,200 bucks u can get a brand new ZF tranny which is a lot stronger and...brand new. I was gonna mate the ZF w/ a BW 13-56 which is the next one up from the 45..i wouldn't recommend the 45 i think they use those on the Rangers. The 150s-250s and i think 350s all used the 13-56 from 88+ i think, so it is a pretty strong unit.
