i have a 1995 explorer (ranger) with a 4.0 and 4wheel drive. i have my starter loose but cant seem to be able to get it out. seems as if the front diff is in the way. i cant seem to find any strait answers the entire web and just cant believe that on every forum having to do with rangers and explorers no one has made a sticky about this or really even answered the question of what has to be removed for the starter to come out? i just find it hard to believe that nobody has had this issue before....do i need to remove the downtube or the diff or unbolt the motor mounts and lift the motor? please please help!!!!
I'm assuming you have it on a jack so that the suspension is drooped fully? A '95 explorer and a '95 ranger are significantly different. Explorers "upgraded" in '95 to SLA, but Rangers were still rocking the TTB setup. That in it's self makes a huge difference in clearances. I've never worked under a 4x4 RBV with SLA, although I haven't had any trouble with clearance issues like that on my F150 ('02 with SLA).
My 1999 Ranger Manual shows the removal of the starter is with the gear downward and the wiring connections upward. If I understand your EXPLORER problem correctly you can't back out the starter enough to drop the gear end down. I would definetly consider if dropping the front axle would allow it to clear, or maybe pulling the engine with the starter attached. Not!
wow cool thanx guys for the info....i allways thaught that the ranger and expo setup were same....I was replacing the starter due to starter issues...i tested my relay, cables, connections and my battery along with my ignition switch. but i figured out how IM going to solve this problem. the explorer in question was 4wd with 220,000m,crapp ball joints, front axles goin out, rusty as crapp, had the blown out air assist susp, and was generally a p.o.s. i went on craigslist found one 2wd with 117,000, str8 body good susp, decent brakes for 400 bux. the guys that had it before thaught it had bad tranny, turns out radiator was leaking tranny fluid into coolant and the tranny was just real low. so the radiator came off the old one, cooling system got flushed out, new starter got returned for new tranny fluid, filter and 1 brake caliper. got the new one running before my head hit the sheets last night hehehe....thanx for the help guys even tho the post prolly shoulda been elsewhere on this site (its not a ranger lol) !!!!!!!!
