You can either take out the spider gears and weld the side gears to the carrier, or you can weld the spiders to the side gears, then weld the gears to the carrier.
save your self the headache why not just install a mini-spool for aprox $40-$60 it is by far a better investment than welding the spider and side gears together. I have seen some open diffs that were wqelded and guys welded in old bolts and all kinds of crap to get it all to hold together
AZ4x4f150 is right. Go with the mini-spool. I had the exact same situation with a broken carrier in my 9". I got an open diff from the junkyard for $50 and a mini-spool off ebay for $26.
Welding the gears does work, but it's irreversible. Mini spools can be taken out.
If you install a mini-spool the pinion shaft is supposed to be the weakest link. If you weld the spider gears and everything else the weakest link then is probalbly going to be the axle shaft or if you didn't weld it good enough and it snaps a weld inside you're only going to do more damage trying to drive it home or probably not move it at all without breaking the ring gear teeth or pinion gear teeth.
Which then you went from a new pinion shaft costing $5.00 compared to a whole new axle which nowadays are not cheap at all.
