which gears and locker?

I have a 99 f250 4x4 diesel that currently has open diffs 3.73 gears and 35in tires. I'm going to lower my gears and put lockers in and was wondering if 4.30 or 4.56 gears would be better for towing, off road and street driving? any experience with this combo would be appreciated.

The higher the number, the more revolutions the engine has to make to get the same wheel revolutions. So more RPM's, less fuel efficiency, and more torque. For towing, or applications needing torque and power, "taller" gears are ideal. Of course, you can always overdo things.

"Shorter" gears, 3.55, 2.88, etc, are better for highways since they lower the RPM's the engine makes, which increases fuel efficiency. They will lack the gut power though, and won't be able to tow as ablely.

I have 3.73 LS. Frankly, the diesel gives me more than enough torque. I dunno that taller gears would make that big a difference. If and when I run out of torque, I shift down. No big deal. That's my .02 anyway.
