I bought a few sets of stainless dog dish hub caps from DENNIS CARPENTER at the SUPERNAT'S.
GREAT PRICE......BUT HERE IS THE QUESTION.......How do you mount these on stock wheels? Is the stock 15'' 1956 f100 wheel and these dog-dishes mountable?
I have seldom mounted a dog dish......and these are new...so no beating the crap out of them with my rubber mallet......but what gives?
Are the wheels different? Thanks......Bill
The wheels have bumps that fit into the inside of the hub caps. It took me a while to find 5 wheels that were the same. I was told (don't know if its true) that these were made up until 64.
I put mine on by hand. Somone used a rubber mallet on one (tire shop) and put a small dent in one.
I use the heel of my hand to install, and my finger tips to remove. These caps do require the nubs to be inside the ridge around the lugs instead of on the outside of that ridge.
I have smoothie moons (no comments) and the caps fit on the same way.
I ended up having one get dented, so I bought a replacement at the "Three Day" annual swap meet here. The lip of the cap that contacts the edge of the wheel was not quite deep enough (by a half smidge) and it never would "snap" in enough to hold. I ended up having to use the old one.
depends bill . if ya got later wheels , like mine from a 83 i parted the tabs are on the outside of the center for mounting 'em . on the oe 15's i got laying around as was said they , the tabs are on the inside . so i'll bet yer caps from carpenter are for inside tabs , dont think they're gonna fit so well on the later rims . i found and use a set of 57 fairlane passenger car caps on mine from a couple diff places , including a yard sale {?} . ya can weld 'em on , maybe put a big bolt in 'em if they wont work ..... right ?????????? LOL !!!!!!!!!!
Thanks guys.....the wheels are on a 53 ...and they won't work either.
The 56f100 has 56 wheels and only 2 work...but I still am having a hard time installing them.
I have 1971 rims and maybe they will fit on them....I will try that later.
SOMEONE SHOULD LIST THIS WHEN THEY SELL THEM TO YOU........LIVE and Learn!!!thanks
I have about 20 wheels now. I have always used cragars on my cars, but got such a good deal from D.C. that I decided to go the red wheel with the dog dishes like BOB CLARK did on his 56--number2.
Bill
Well,I looked over all my wheels....and I have 3 that will work. I never knew this was a problem with dog dish hub caps.....and the right wheel needed. I thought a 15'' ford wheel would accept them...all them.
I will only need one wheel...it looks like.
The other dog dishes (4) will have to wait.
Bill....... I've had to gease the edge to bang my caps on. I bought new wheels from Mid-Fifties and I have to beat the f#$k out of my restored Merc caps to get them on. I went as far as grinding down the inside nubs on my rims to get my caps to lock on.
Brian.....all I want is a nice driver just like yours.....and proud of it like you are.....it is nice!!
Mich Rick....the 3 wheels I have accepted the new DENNIS CARPENTER caps with just a bump of the palm of my hand, and came off easily with a screw-driver.
