i have a 92 f150 with the i6 and a 5spd manual tranny. the truck is dead silent on the highway and i love it, which is why i dont want to drop an aftermarket exhaust into it. what can i do to the truck to get more power without making it too much louder? will headers make it louder? the air filter on these trucks arent restrictive, so im not going to replace that. i will probably do the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. any other suggestions to squeeze a little more juice out of the 4.9? -thanks
Honestly, no, not really. Even intake/exhaust wont do that much. There isnt much aftermarket for the 6...maybe just tune it up real nice and advance the timing a little bit.
The stock airbox is NOT restrictive on the I6, that box will support 300HP which means the I6 is 150hp short. There's not much you can do to the motor to get big power increases besides a cam swap, and there aren't many of those to pick from, so the next best thing is a gearing change. Many of the I6 trucks got rediculous ratios like 3.08 or even 2.73, if you can't use OD unless you're over 60mph then you got one of these. Swap in some 3.55's and you'll see improved performance and better milage too if you live in a hilly region.
are there any higher performance cap and rotor kits? i dont think i would ever swap a rear end, and i definitatly wouldnt tear the motor down to put a cam in, but i really appreciate all the ideas so far.

well if your not going to tear into the motor then i doubt there is anything, you could put on an electric waterpump and electric fans off of a taurus (don't think they make electric water pumps for your motor)
if you want to tear into the motor put in a cam port your head high compression pistons would be a really good start, you can port match your intake to your head, acid dip your exhaust manifolds (trick i learned from F.A.S.T) or just put on headers (it's more expensive to dip your manifolds than put on headers)
you could play with your cam timing or put on roller rockers with a higher ratio
msd makes universal wire kits, use one of them with a blaster 2 coil and see if you can find an aftermarket cap and rotor, i know the blaster 2 coil won't plug into your wiring harness but just snip the ends and put on connectors and it'll work
a cap and rotor will do exactly nothing for performance. Maybe combine that with a colder plug with a tighter gap along with some good wires and a hotter coil and advance the timing, then you might see a boost but not much. Your truck is a low RPM torque motor, you need to turn RPMs to make good horsepower. Drop a K&N filter in your air box and slap on a turbo muffler (sound will get a little deeper but not much louder) and thats about the extent of your mods...
