OK, so I just replaced the side tank on my 1988 f250. When I took the old tank off each of the plastic fuel line connectors shed its o-ring.
There is no way to get the o-ring back in! (Plus I ended up breaking one of them).
I went to the ford dealer and they said that the part is now coded "improvise"!!! (So they can't get it). I probably couldn't afford new fuel lines anyway.
I found a repair kit online: More Information for DORMAN 800054
However none of my local auto parts stores have this. Has anyone used this kit?
At one store the guy suggested(?) using a high pressure rubber hose. It was funny he basically did not recommend using rubber hose, but said the hose was rated for high pressure. The hose is pretty expensive $9/ft. Also, I am not sure if a hose clamp would be enough to keep it in place. Has anyone done this?
Rockauto shows that repair kit for around $12.00
The 3/8 size is used for the supply line.
5/16 size is the return line.
Note: Those locking clips come in the two different sizes.
Dorman 6 pack of clips. 800015 contains 3 Black clips 3/8 and 3 White clips 5/16.
Usually you can find the repair ends in the Help section at most auto part stores.
The Dorman kit you posted looks like it also comes with a hose barb to splice into the old line. To install you heat up a pot of boiling water. Dip the hose end into the water for a minute. Then shove the barb or fitting into the hose.
Well, I went to yet another auto parts store and got the repair kit. The fittings aren't exactly the same as the factory fittings, you need a tool to disconnect them (purchased separately of course). But I didn't get the tool as I don't plan to use it anytime soon. I'll never find it when I need it if I get it now!
The repair was very easy and the lines are holding. The fitting on the splice however does not inspire confidence. The hose is secured with a crimp style fitting. I would think a hose clamp would be better. The guy at the parts store said that I should not use a hose clamp (so I used the one in the kit).
My local auto parts here in Ohio ( Car Quest Auto Parts ) carry something like I think your talking about. They have the ones that are shown here from rock auto as well. However they sell just the end. Its all plastic with a hose barb on the end. You heat the plastic line in hot water for a min or two slip the crimp ring on the tube and then push the tube on the barb I give it a min to cool and kind of shrink then crimp the ring on and call it a day. I have installed about 30 or so of them here over the last few years. Never had a problem with one.
I tried to find a picture of one online but no such luck.
