what is a explorer?
my dads truck was a f150 ranger xlt but didnt have the crome strips and had a explorer hood ornament and pinstriping. so what makes a truck an explorer? what spasific things did an explorer have? any help?

My truck is an Explorer. An Explorer has a hood ornament, stripes that go down the side of the truck, and has special cloth seat inserts.
I believe that's all the Explorer package was- an apprearance package.

This is my 77 Explorer, they changed the stipes every year or two. 
There are a few other guys on here that know about the Explorers, and should chime in. 
I always thought this shot was so cool the way it came out withthe stormy skies in the backgound.I know if your dad had a Ranger, he could not get the Explorer package. The Explorer package was a trim level, there was no special drive line associated with it. Earlier years had the Explorer emblem below the dent, then from 76, or 77 onward the Explorer (emblem) was above the dent. It is possible your dad, or a previous owner put the Explorer emblem on the hood. Mine is a prime example of a stock 1977 version. Mine has a 300 I6, while my dad's had a 302. I also saw one with a 460 in it. I only ever saw one Explorer 4X4, and I don't know if it was factory or not.
PS: they would paint the mag center of the wheel ocers to match also. Earlier version were orange to match the trucks color, cream as is mine. I believe I even seen a green to match the truck.
