I have a 96 F150 with the 300 six EFI, I have 2 questions. My first problem is this thing hates hot weather. When I first start it in the morning it starts fine. After sitting out in the hot sun I go to start it and it studders and shakes. Sometimes it stalls, sometimes it kicks up to normal idle. It's not throwing any codes. What would cause this? My other question is, being this truck is a 96 (OBD2) can I remove the smog pump without upsetting the computer? Mine has a noisy bearing and I really don't want to replace it.
You'll want to replace the smog pump as it's part of the emissions system - the computer may not work well and you may have more engine troubles if you remove it. Only guess I can think of for warmer weather issues is there has to be something going wrong. Not sure if yours has a distributor or not, but either the ignition module or the engine coolant temp sensor (among others) may be having issues. I would first start by checking codes and doing a wiggle test on all the wiring connectors and go from there.
Dual Tanks? Btw the smog pump on your 96 dumps air into the pipe between the pre cat and after cat it helps the break down of exuast and creates longer life for your catilitic converter by keeping it cool. You can almost count on a code coming up say that bank 3 o2 sensor is bad. Your computer will through that code and no matter what you do your truck will run rich because it will go into a dumy mode you will get alot worse milage too. Plus you will most likely ruin your cattilitic converter and bank 3 o2 sensor. So just get the smog pump there like $78 at rock auto. Or you can pay $78 for the smog pump, plus $53 for the o2 sensor, plus $488 for the catilitic converters I think it should be pretty clear.
as stated before, you need the smog pump, part of your symptoms is it's function. other problem, you have a bad temp sender to the computer, and it is not letting the truck switch from closed/open loop. temp sender is up by the thermostat, and has 2 wires
