Cracked Block Adapter Plate

Does anyone know what would cause the adapter plate to crack? I cracked where the starter connects, if that makes a difference. I would assume the starter would transfer some torque to the plate. maybe it broke from fatigue. Has anyone else ever experienced this? I am just leary now that this could happen again. The truck has 125,000 miles on it so I am going to get the trans done and have the plate swapped out, but in the future if it breaks again I will probably have to bite the bullet and change it myself. It just seems like a lot of work to pull the tranfercase and trans.

Before putting it in I am thinking about going to the local welding shop and having them put a couple of passing of weld in the areas the it cracked.

I just wanted to hear anyone else's experience with this problem, I can't be the only one.
