I have a 1994 ranger and the brake line is leaking next to the gas tank. It looks like i will have to remove the bed from the truck to access the brake line in order to replace it. Can the bed be lifted off by two people? Does anyone know what size torks do i need to remove the bed?
Yes, two people can remove the short bed fairly easily but it helps if you have a third person if it's a long bed. Take both tail lights out, unthread the wire harness for them from where it goes through the bed. You can remove the tailgate to reduce the weight of the bed also. Remove the three screws from the fuel filler neck and guide it out when you lift the bed off. You should be able to leave the fuel cap on so junk won't fall into the filler neck and hose. The six bed bolts should take a #55 torx bit. Keep track of where the bolts came from. The two up by the cab will be longer than the four back by the tailgate. Those four should be the same length. If you can spray the bolt threads with your favorite rusty bolt spray it will help them come loose. Let us know how it goes.
Why bother to remove the bed or the tank? Just cut the brake line in front of the gas tank and re-route a new section. I did that on my daughters old Tempo. It rusted off somewhere under the gas tank. I used a tubing cutter and a double flare tool. I didn't even take the old brake line out. Just make sure the new brake line doesn't interfere with the drive shaft or the exhaust. I use nylon wire ties (lots of them) to hold the replacement brake line in place to it wouldn't chafe on anything. That has been almost two years ago and she is still running it.
I have removed the bed myself on my 92 Ranger. I just unbolted it, unplugged the electrical connector on the rear for the tail lights and lifted up the side I needed to work on.
