My C6 is kaput, and I'm heading out to the pick-a-part next week to find a replacement tranny. A C4 would do me fine; are they the same physical size, or would I need a new shaft?
Worst case, I'll be buying a rebuilt from O'Reilly. Anyone had any experiences with their transmissions?
A C-4 is about 3" shorter than a C-6. You will need a longer driveshaft. Also the driveshaft slip yoke is a different size. Smaller on the C-4.
Also keep in mind that you will need a C-4 torque converter. The C-4 was also available with two different bellhousings. Either will botl up to your motor, but you need to get the large bell so your C-6 flexplate will work.
Get a rebuild kit and a haynes manual and you CAN rebuild it yourself! These trannies are extremely easy to work on. I Did a 302 conversion to my ranger and had to GUT the C4 tranny to put the new shaft in for the tcase. I even installed a B&M shift kit while I had it torn apart. Do not fear the auto tranny! It is not that hard once you have it apart, just take your time, lay everything out nicely, and work in a CLEAN environment. The valve body does NOT like dirt. The ONLY tool I did have that I needed were snap ring pliers. Everything else is sockets and wrenches. Any question lemme know and I would be happy to help ya out. Good Luck.
