i just bought a complete engine and aod fro a wrecked thunderbird 1991.is this engine basicly the same as the mustang 5.0 or whats the differences in the 2 .i notice the headers seem to have bigger tubes and the air compressor ,power pump are reversed from what ive seen on the mustang engines, Is this a roller cam engine ?
the t-bird engine isnt exactly the same as the 5.0 ho. it falls about 20hp short of it. if i remember correctly it was the intake/ exhaust/ and exhaust manifold differences. all of which can be cheaply improved on with the mustang parts if you wanted. im not 100% certain on what the exact differences are right now as im kind of tired, but i know for a fact the t-bird engine is slightly less powerful and i can probably get back to you tomorrow on what the exact differences are. the only cars that came with the 225hp 300tq ho specs right from the factory were the mustang and the lincoln mark 7 lsc.
It's still the same motor, the T-bird did have a more restrictive exhaust on it but the engine internals are the same, so the motor is capable of the same output.
i was really needing to know if the cam was the sam ebecause i think the mustang stock cam is a great little cam for what it is ,and i plan to relace the fuel injection with a weiand action plus intake and maybe a holley 570 avenger or might even use a 600 edelbrock would this make the 5.0 run decend or what ? this engine will be going into my 58 stepside with the aod and 3.45 gears in rear
Yes the cam is the same and it's pretty good for an EFI motor but a bit restrictive with a carb. There's no need for more than 500cfm unless the heads are ported, but don't spend any money to have somebody else work them, just get some GT40 or better if you're not going to do it yourself. If you have an OD tranny don't be afraid to throw some more gearing at it, up to 4.10's with stock sized tires and more if they're bigger, with that tranny it will still return 20mpg if you can keep hwy speeds at all reasonable.
Also the power loss on the T-Birds was because of a lower profile and more restrictive Intake. I thought the exhaust was the same. Understood the smaller intake as the power
loss. I'm probably wrong.
Well even the mustang 5.0HO intake is retrictive around the TB opening, and the lower runner passages on all the car intakes have some tight bends and narrowing down towards the heads which further limits airflow. The Explorer intakes are the best stock 5.0 intake available but even they benefit from some porting work.
