TPMS Sensors

I know there are many threads about these and I hate to add to this but....

How can you tell if wheels have the sensors?

I have an 08 FX4 with TPMS that had the 18in wheels stock. I recently purchased a set of fairly new 20in alloy OEM wheels from ebay that were on an 08 F350. The seller claims that the sensors are in the wheels, but after about 20 miles of driving with them installed, I'm getting a TPMS error.

So, either the sensors aren't in the wheels (he may have a job 1 08) or perhaps they need to be reset because they went into sleep mode or reset because they are on a new vehicle. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I would think that they have to be synced with the system. Otherwise any truck driving next to you would throw it off. Maybe take the sensors out of the old wheels and put them in the new wheels? I have no knowledge of how they work, just thinking out loud.

Sounds reasonable that they may have to be sync'd. I hope I don't have to break down 8 tires to get the old sensors in the new wheels.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll run by the dealer on Monday and see if they need to be zapped to match my truck.

You don't need to go to the dealer, any tire store should be able to do this for you. Just had it done at a local tire shop for my 05 Mountaineer.

You should have received a TPMS reset tool from the dealer with the truck. There is a protocol for resetting in you owners manual, its one of those pain in the a** key on, do this then do that and on and on but it should recognize the new sensors. They are also location specific so it may just be sensing that they're not in original positions. Of course all of this assumes the FACTORY sensors are actually in the tires you bought. I had Discount Tire swap mine out when I changed tires and rims.

Not all trucks received the reset tool. Only those trucks which call for different pressures front and rear. However, you are absolutely correct and the only thing that needs to be done is to follow the retrain procedure in the owners manual. You will also learn in a hurry if the sensors are there (or not) by the system responding with a horn honk as each sensor is trained and recognized by the system. No horn honk means that the sensor is not there or you are not properly following the procedure...

Also remember to take the truck out for a nice spin before trying to train the sensors so they have time to wake up...

Thanks all, actually there is nothing in the owners manual that references a TPMS reset procedure or that the truck even has the tpms. I don't have any fob which I've read about in other threads either (obviously), so is the reset procedure the same turn the key on...press on the brake, etc without the fob????

The reset procedure that should be able to be found somewhere within your owners manual unless your truck came with a old copy. You must have the fob (reset tool) to be able to complete this procedure. The reset tool is Ford part number 8C2Z-1A203-A (Motorcraft part number TPMS19) which lists for $37.98...

Here is a link to the most recent version of the owners manual which shows the procedure. The procedure information starts on page 230...

All I can say is, I am glad I have a Job 1 truck with no TPMS. My wife's Edge has had the light come on twice, and I am constantly reading about people having issues with them online. If I had them, I would do the "pipe bomb" mod and be done with it.

You need this tool.

My owners manual for the '08 F-150 said that it was to be in the truck when I bought it so I went to the dealer and spoke to my salesman and he had one ordered for me. No charge to me.
