i recently pulled my 390 60 over and decided to what the heck put that 428 crank in it well after going back and forth with machine shops and local mechanics this is where im at
the 428 crank is good bought a 428 pioneer flywheel with the weight to internally balance this baby, pistons rods everything is weighed and balanced as one
this is the problem the stroke diff is
390 3.78
428 3.98
the engine is not assembled yet but waiting to receive the flywheel via mail than final balancing
my concern is with this difference in stroke am i going to have any issues in finding the right gasket copper and .09 is the best i can find
ive already purchased the shorter hydraulic lifter pushrods
stock is i believe 9.6
my shorties are @ 9.3
am i overlooking anything
would running the shorter pushrods solve the valve lift problem from contact with the piston top or am i going to have an issue with the piston bottoming out on the head surface
i dont know
i cant find a for sure answer or anybody who has done this stroker setup yet
You need different pistons. Search "pin height" in this forum.
The different length push rods are for fine tuning valve lash. It's counterproductive to reduce the valve lift on a bigger engine, might as well install a stock cam to keep the valves from opening.
Search 390 to 410 conversion. So do you know that your pistons are poppin up outta the bore or is this a guess? If you have the right pistons there shouldnt be and issue as this was a factory setup. Minus the overbore of course.
With my stroker, since you use the 428 crank, we got 6.49in lenght connecting rods and 410 pistons, make sure you get 410 pistons or you'll crack the block, since you use the 428 crank, you need shorter pistons, we had this happen and it was definetly a waste of machining a block just to have it cracked
I run a 418Fe 390/428 Crank and my pistons set about .004 out of the hole. You can either find new pistons or if their is enough ont he top of the piston. .300" plus you can just have them machinced down to fit. Either what your going to have to get teh piston lower so you don't crack a head.
thanks
polcat and everybody else as well
thats what im lookin into
i found 410 pistons .060 over and with the difference in compression height between the existing 390 pistons and the replacement ones to be this should solve this problem
let me ask you though on your stroked 390 did you run arp connecting rod bolts and main bolts or studs
if not do you think the stock ones are just as good
