Finding TDC then aligning rotor

I Aligned the 0 mark on the pulley and then set the rotor in place with the cap aligned to #1. Now if I set the timing to what summit racing says 8 BTDC It starts very easily but backfires through the carb. If I advance the timing closer to 0 it takes a long time to start but doesn't backfire through the carb. Do I need to go back and re-set the rotor again with the engine timing aligned on around 8 BTDC or does this not make a difference because the rotor will fall into place when its close due to the size of the timing gears?

Actually my question doesn't sound right. I took the rotor completely out and rotated the engine like an idiot. Now I need to know what the procedure is for installing a new rotor using the TDC marks on the balancer.

Find the number one sparkplug and take it out. Turn the engine over by hand while someone holds their thumb over the sparkplug hole. When they feel pressure on their thumb, start watching for the timing marks, and set it around 8-10 degrees, then drop the distributor in so the rotor points to #1 wire in the cap like you did before. It may take several tries, and you might need to take a nut driver or long extension with a small socket, and turn the little shaft down in the dist hole to get the dist to drop all the way in.

After you get it started, time it with a light.

If you use an extension with a socket, do yourself a favor and tape the socket to the extension...

-Enjoy

my buddie came over one night, had just instaled a new dist. truck ran like crap. I pulled #1, and found tdc. opened the cap, and the rotor was on #5. I just switched the wires around 1 post, re set the timeing, and sent him on his merry way.

That's fine, but you will find the wires don't want to fit correctly if you do that too much. They are not the correct length. And you will also blow someone's mind if they have a cap that has #1 labeled on it.
