9" axle removal tricks
I am trying to get the axle out of my 9" to put a new third member in. I have tried everything I can think of. I removed the four retaining bolts and tried turning the drum around and threading the lugbolts on about 2 turns and slamming it out. I also tried putting a large bolt in from the inside and whacking it with a hammer. Does it help to loosen the third member? I would think it would make it harder. How can the dang thing be in there so tight? Those 4 nuts are the only thing holding it in.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Jun-02 AT 11:17 PM (EST)]I ran into this problem and this is how I solved it: Take a piece of log chain about 3 ft. long. The links must be big enough to slide over the lug bolts. Put one end link over a bolt and put a lug nut on it, put the other end link over a bolt opposite the first one and put a nut on it. You should have a loop of chain about 18 inches long with both ends attached to the axle. Put on some heavy gloves. Take a bar or pipe about 2 ft. long and put it in the loop. Turn the bar horizontal and holding both ends of the bar, with the chain centered and slack, Jerk outward on the bar. The heavier the bar the better it works. When the axle comes loose it may come out forcefully so don't do this while sitting on a stool or you may damage some important body parts.
Also, be sure that the vehicle is supported properly so you don't get the thing on top of you. I know this sounds kinda goofy but it worked for me.

66 Ranger, that is a slick idea. I made a plate that fits over 3 studs. I attach a body dent puller to the plate. A few whacks with puller will break it loose. Actually, most of the time I can get them out without using the puller.
