I had a growling sound in 4th gear after downshifting from 5th and costing to make a turn. The growling noise was around 1200 RPM and 30 mph.
2 transmission shops and 2 other people said bearings in Tranny. The noise seems to be coming from in front of the shifter,It does has a new solid flywheel and China clutch.I just installed a new rebuilt tranny tonight and the noise is exactly the same,I find it hard to believe 2 trannys would do the same thing. It's a 94.5 f250 2 wheel drive
any one else getting a growl in 4th when costing
Jim
Does it do this at idle in neutral with your foot off the clutch. The ZF is a fairly noisy transmission even in perfect working order. The growling at idle is normal gear rollover, hope you didn't replace the old one just because of this noise.
Noise disappears when engine RPM exceeds 1500 without depressing clutch pedal.
• Neutral rollover is caused by the engine firing pulses transmitted through the gear set. Some neutral rollover is normal on the 7.5L application. The dual mass flywheel on the 7.3L Diesel and the two stage clutch on the 4.9L & 5.8L should eliminate this concern on these engines.
• Check engine idle quality and speed. A rough or low idle will aggravate this concern.
The growling mainly starts in 4th when I'm slowing down either after coming out of 5th or after getting on it in 4th then getting off the gas
The growl is louder than the engine.
2 transmission shops said bearing or gear but after replacing the tranny the exact noise is still there,I just don't think it could be the new tranny
one guy said I should go back to the daul mass set up
Jim
Not had too many dealings with the Diesel set up mostly worked with gas ZFs, but they mention switching to dual mass flywheel to solve several problems. Hopefully some one can tell what is causing you noise for sure before you drop the cash to go back the dual mass.

thanks for getting back with me. If I have to pull the tranny again I'm leaning towards the LUK solid mass and get rid of the China one that is in it now
