Sounds like your mind is made up all ready. Hope it works out for you.
i'm not boycotting this truck YET, i've just been needing a diesel for awhile and now this kind of gives me the push i need to go buy it. Towing my 28' car trailer loaded up with a weekends worth of gear is just a bit much for my truck at this point after towing it with a diesel to an out of state race...dang trailer was loaded to the gills and still out accelerated my V10 empty. It's worked to date, but i know from expereince there's more towing power out there, i'm just wondering WTF happened to the V10 Friday, everything was going just fine and then like a switch got flipped, it just lost all power and was blowing black smoke like crazy....pending a repair bill under a couple grand i'll still keep it and just add another diesel to the fleet, but i'm just stumped as to what in the heck happened that fast and that dramaticly for the truck to go from business as usual to a black smoke spewing, stinkey, barely get itself down the road hunk of iron.
i'm just upset ford does'nt have a better offering in the diesel department than the current 6.0/6.4 model. I have too many local contractor buddies that have been riding loaners more than their personal vehicles due to never ending warranty work, so i just soon not go there...but i hate to get another chevy platform since they have their own issues outside of the killer drivetrain...they're just not built for working, more for soccer dads with all the frills and gadgets they come with.
Alright, this is a hoot. The tech Friday in the heat of the moment took the air box apart to see if MAF was okay, which it was, but never pulled the air filter out. The air filter is less than 1 month old, i take all our trucks to the same GM dealer for service work, always have sine they get us in and out and have service records for all our trucks.
So i trailer it to buddies shop Sunday, he calls this morning after i stopped by to see the scan taking place and lets me know he fixed my truck. Get this, the plastic nipple at the front of our stock air filters (AC Delco since it was a GM garage that swapped it last month) the fricken glue let go and the nipple/nose piece the air filters pleats are glued to let go and got sucked up into the breather tube, and my buddy said it was wedged at an angle so only about 1/4" of actual air space was open, hence the rich condition....why the puter did'nt try to change the tune, we dont know.
So there's the stupid answer to a problem if anybody is ever that lucky to have it, check the nose piece of the air cleaner and make sure it does'nt clog up your air inlet tube
this is your trucks way of telling you to keep that GM junk away from it
glad you got it fixed though
GM junk trying to assasinate my ride or Ford trying to slit it's wrist for having GM junk in/on it??
Just hope it comes out of this miss. It's had a slight miss when starting cold that 6 shops have'nt been able to track down in 2 years time, new plugs/new coils...still got a slight miss when cold it eventually drives out of when it gets warm. Now it's like that, but worse, all the time; did'nt come out of it yesterday at all so i had them flush the injectors, fuel system hoping it was just all the gas/loading up on the plugs and what not, so i guess we'll see.
Having same problem with triton v10 in 2000 f450 no black smoke though everything else sounds same any ideas on what to check have changed fuel pump fuel filter throttle positioning sensor cleaned maf tried new maf still getting P0113 and P0112 codes have you had any luck with yours
If it makes ya feel better, mine blew up the following week...dropped a valve into the #3 cylinder. Guess with only 120K on the ticker i'da been happier with a spark plug popping out vs an engine swap.

Got an engine in my garage that did the exact same thing....

I drag race with a hand full of Ford techs and this is not an uncommon occurance i was told. Oh well, grabbed one out of a junkyard and threw it in, 80K on this one, but even at 80K miles it has loads more power than mine ever had even when i bought it with 68K on it.
