Been helping a neighbour with his newly purchased 85 4x4 with a 6.9.
He was changing the glowplugs and found something on the back of the engine .
Its a round electric connection that plugs into another round connection.
It plugs into a thing thats screwed into the block on the back side of the engine.
Its fairly big and one black wire runs from it up through the firewall.
The rest of the wires seem to go into the main truck wiring.
Its unplugged right now and we are wondering what it is before we plug it back in.
Its on the back of the engine closer to the drivers side of the block?
I told my buddy that I knew the best diesel mechanics in Noth Americia and they would tell us.
He thinks Im joking but I know someone here will know.
Thanks ahead of time.
Is it on the drivers side or pass. side?? If it's drivers side it could be the temp switch.
If pass side back by the bellhousing it's an oil press. switch. I gotta van though, It may be different.

ah ha its the controller?
So it has a relay (on the innner fender ) and a relay?
So if the controller is unplugged could it be by passed?
Theres a button on the dash.
Glow plug controller, actually it screws into the coolant jacket through the drivers side head.
They have been known to twist off when you try to remove them which requires removing the head to get it out usually.
And they usually fail in the on position, so it burns the glow plugs out when it fails.
Last price I saw on one was a little over 100 dollars, down from the original price of 150 dollars.
Manual control is the usual option when they go bad, 1983 thru 1986 trucks.
Glow plug relay 1983 thru 1986 trucks.
Behind the passenger side battery on the inner fender well.
Trigger wire from the glow plug controller is the small purple wire, usually closest to the engine.
